TITLE: The Stranger
AUTHOR: Albert Camus
RATING: ☆☆☆ (3/5)
This is one of the most challenging books I have ever read. And I am glad to have finished this masterpiece from Albert Camus. Reading his books feels like me having an aneurysm hahaha.
This book is so hard to digest. All that existentialism label and stuff. My head is aching from reading this but i find it quite good, the protagonist outlook in life was really different, his way of reacting to things are not the ones everyone expect from a person and I haven’t met anyone who does not weep for her mother’s death/funeral and one who agrees to marry a girl just because it would definitely make her happy. Weird isn’t it? But they happen in real life.
During the first half of the book you can see how simple his life is, living with simple pleasures, his reactions and views are really not that complicated, this seems natural for some people these days.. and I bet some people can relate to him. I think how he live his life is so uncomplicated and doesn’t give that much opinion in his surroundings remember the funeral? For some reasons things turned out not too well when he shot that arab at the beach, after that he was put into trial. Sometimes I’m wondering if he is being judged because of the murder or was it because of his mother’s untimely death which he doesn’t mourn, and by the way people judged him because some things really doesn’t matter to him. He doesn’t show remorse at all.
For me the book also describes whether a person believes in God or not, whether he/she accepts his/her own faith. Sometimes it is what you really believed in. How humanly a person can be or it’s just how someone live his life and finds the meaning of it, each person’s view on finding the purpose of his life or his well being.
This book is a must read if you’re into this kind of thing. A book about existentialism. I will definitely read his other works but maybe in the future haha it’s kind of hard to understand at times.
