“You don’t need Princes to Save You. I don’t have a lot of Patience for stories in which Women are rescued by Men. -Neil Gaiman”
“Well,” said the third. “Somebody’s got to do the honours.”
“I shall,” said the queen, gently. She lowered her face to the sleeping woman’s. She touched the pink lips to her own carmine lips and she kissed the sleeping girl long and hard.”
This somehow is kind of a retelling of the Snow White and the dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty all rolled into one. Somehow it comes to mind about it being a lesbian theme because of the queen and the princess but no. The kiss was just needed for the Princess to wake up. So the princess or so you think, but wait for the ending. There are also dwarfs here but they’re just 3 of them. And of course there’s the dreaded witch who of course curse the princess, again or so you think. There are sleepers here and they’re talking and walking and blah blah blah. There would come a point where the story is just too deceiving and that’s exactly the thing that would make it really really good.
Gaiman was so good in turning fairytales into creepy ones and this, for me was made in such whimsical dark and creepy way. Women Empowerment in here! Somehow this reminded me of Gaiman’s another retelling about Snow White which is the Snow, Glass, Apples. (Please read that one also)
This in any was not a graphic novel but the illustrations are very good and very gorgeous. I like it very much. The ending though was unexpected, I didn’t think of it that way but this is just too lovely! I’ll be rereading this again soon if I was able to buy a hard copy. The cover was indeed beautiful and mesmerizing. The feel of it was just amazing! I enjoyed reading this so much! Another Gaiman hit for me. For me this deserves 5 stars.
“There are choices, she thought, when she had sat long enough. There are always choices.”
