Choose YOU is an essay written and shared by Dani Mercado to The Ugly Writers under the theme After The Storm for the month of June
Every hour and every second of every day there is someone struggling with God knows what. People with the loudest laughs and brightest smiles often hide the most tremendous sorrows. Be it light or heavy, we all have burdens we carry.
In a moment of weakness, those who are hurt push people away, those who feel empty find fake happiness in things that don’t really matter, and sometimes, those who are aching harm themselves or others and blame everything and everyone but themselves just so they can play victim.
The truth is, the reason we feel alone and miserable is because we’ve forgotten our true value. We talk to people who don’t actually listen. We try hard to make them hear and understand the pain but they don’t really care. We start neglecting those who genuinely love us and forget who we really are. It is time to stop this nonsense.
I used to believe that people don’t change, that people are either utterly bad or just plain good. Now, I believe that we are not born bad nor good, we choose it. Have you ever been caught or failed and blamed someone else? Missed a deadline believing you can just do it later? Don’t you think it’s time to stop making excuses? Things happened because of the choices you’ve made. Remember that lie you once said? You didn’t lie because you had to lie, you lied because you chose to lie. When you cheated, no one forced you to cheat. You cheated because you chose to cheat. For whatever reason, we find something or someone else to blame for things that we did. It is time to own our faults. We always have a choice. You have a choice.
You have a choice to stay away from negativity. You have a choice to change for the better. All of us have made mistakes, all of us have been hurt, it is up to you how you would like to move forward. You have a choice to keep on lying but you also have a choice to apologize and own your mistake. You have a choice to keep believing your lies or just accept the truth. When things get rough, you have a choice to talk to people who truly listen. You have a choice to feel bad about yourself but you can also choose to simply be better. You have the choice to choose yourself and no one can ever take that away from you.
You have a choice. Choose YOU.
