Incubus is a poem written by Kevin Rein and shared with The Ugly Writers under the theme Something Spooky for the month of October
Incubus
Some nights I feel so strangely occupied.
I sweat heavily in my sleep. I squeak a cry.
I’m not sure what’s happening. I’m like about to die.
My dreams are like my whole day in a rewind.
I talk to myself. Someone answering in my head,
We swap, and we overlap until I wakeup with a shadow beside my bed.
And the shadow would look at me and smile,
He’s like an angel with wings but with fiery eyes.
He wears all my secrets and recites all my lies.
He’s a friend, I’m just not very sure from where.
Sometimes he would wake me up from one dream to another.
He would save me from a nightmare and calm me down like a master.
Sometimes he is sweet.
He would bite words to ears and my fear is dead.
Before sunup he would crawl back under my bed,
But before he disappears he would whisper to me,
“I am just the demon inside your head.”
