refrigerator notes

refrigerator notes is a poem written by Sho Aishe and shared by The Ugly Writers under the theme Intrusive Thoughts

was it only yesterday

when you cried about the dark

being too scary?

that silence became uncomfortable enough

for you to chatter away in

riddles i could not understand?

how is it like living in a world

overflowing with words.

where to speak is necessary because your thoughts

feel like weights chained to your ankles?

did my cuts ever leave a scar?

my brother,

i think you misunderstood—

this pain eating at my earlobe

isn’t yours to take.

and the anger sitting on top of your fingertips

came from the man who

had it behind his teeth.

doesn’t that explain why my blood bleeds in blue,

and your cries can paint a town red?

i was never strong enough to carry both of our crosses.

so

forgive me.

if i am only able to give you pieces

instead of a whole.

to the earth we return
