Sometimes, I think you give yourself too little credit

when we created snow angels out of the dead meadow,

made alive by the constant bickering of where to lie

next: take one sock off and the rest will follow in

an unbroken chain of longing, hearts pounding,

lips in chorus, love dying into silent screams of

passion withheld, then made raw. I like to think

you know nothing about every object that floats

underneath my sky, your name etched into each

satellite, your face a pale silhouette on the horizon

I want to re-live when the sun falls and rises—like

a perfect pendulum against this ruckus we call life.

I would like to think this moment is as endless as

that little melody you hum into my dreams, into

nothingness, or so you believed when I counted

every single note, every rest, and made peace with

my worries, because for once—and for all time—I

do not need the fear the darkness behind my eyes.

to the earth we return
