yearning

I want to drink the sunset whole,

and wear the lights like silk.

taste the growl of thunder,

and catch the unspooled silver threads of time.

I want to know how planets dream,

when sailing through the cosmic dark.

to feel what ancient trees must feel

with centuries beneath their bark.

I want to speak in tongues of wind,

feel the languages of rain,

hold every shade of joy and grief,

until my hands are rainbow stained.

Flesh and bone are finite things,

and minutes tick in measured breath.

my arms stretch wide but cannot reach

the depth of all I’ve left unfathomed.

How cruel to give us endless sight

while binding us to mortal ground,

to show us every color blooms

past the ones that we have found.

Still, something in me burns to try,

to press against human walls,

and to live until my finite self

has tasted infinite and all.
