Grandma Jo

They call her Grandma Jo.

She has been a fixture here

since I can remember her.

That is over forty years now.

Grandma Jo walks around

with a beaten, brown

suitcase on wheels.

Pulling it wherever she goes.

No one knows what is in it.

Grandma Jo always has

may layers of worn clothing on

no matter the heated weather.

Most of the time you see her

parked, rocking back and forth

on the steps of an old, brick building

that has seen better days.

They say that is where

Grandma Jo used to work

before it was shut down

but she is still showing

up each and every day.

You can tell she was a looker.

Life out here has taken

a bit of that and her spirit.

Her eyes have wrinkled

with the time spent.

It will be a sad day

when Grandma Jo leaves us.

She is the most constant

in this ever-changing place.
